Thanksgiving in Savannah, GA

We had an unconventional Thanksgiving this year, as we had just been up north visiting with family and celebrating the marriage of our cousin, so it just didn’t feel right to fly back a few weeks later. We started to think about local mini-treks that were on our list and we landed on a hands-down choice: Savannah! Located only 2.5 hours away was a gem of a historical city that we had not explored in over a dozen years. And so, for Thanksgiving this year, we ate our way through Savannah, GA.

The Hotel

There are an overwhelming number of choices of boutique hotels and bed-and-breakfasts in Savannah, so much so that I didn’t even know where to start looking.
We landed on Planter’s Inn Savannah, a colonial-style inn with a wonderful location in the heart of everything we wanted to trek to in Savannah.

This simple, no-frills inn offered standard comforts but offered a wonderful location and an easement for traveling through Savannah. Our boys loved looking out of the inn’s windows and seeing the horse and buggies galloping by.

The inn offers a complimentary wine and cheese hour prior to dinner as well as fresh-baked (and warm!) chocolate chip cookies in the evening. We had a wondeful time there with dear friends from Jacksonville who joined us.

Before the Eating

Before we ate our way through Savannah, we throughly enjoyed exploring the museums run by Coastal Heritage Society, attractions and exhibits in Tricentennial Park that would capture the attention of adults and children alike.
Our hands-down favorite museum was the Savannah Children’s Museum, where our kids literally played for three hours.

This gem of an attraction offered countless activities for kids such as a hide-and-seek maze, water play, chalkboards, slides, crafts, a garden and so much more.

Our absolute favorite part of the museum was the Storybook Nook, a cozy cove of bricks where kids could read books or put on a puppet show. It was seriously an incredible place to trek around with young kids!

For adults, Coastal Heritage Society offers other ways to explore such as Savannah’s History Museum, Georgia State Railroad Museum and so much more!

Ok, Back to the Eating

Savannah blew us away with the number of high-quality restaurants and the uniqueness of menus that each offered. Here are some of our favorite places to dine in Savannah:

Ice Cream

We were told by a neighbor, “You have to try Leopold’s Ice Cream!” And so while the boys were resting, I trekked on my own just around the corner from Planter’s Inn to try out this treat. It was in fact a success (I chose pumpkin pie spice flavor because it was Thanksgiving Eve!) and I was left the opposite of disappointed.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner…Oh My!

Best Seafood:
We stumbled upon Barracuda Bob’s, located on River St. with beautiful views and we thought we’d give it a try. We were blown away by the freshness of the seafood and we highly recommend the crab & corn chowder and the gator gumbo! Such a great start to our trip!
Be sure to ask the staff for some stories about their unique, historic location!

Most Unique:
We are big fans of our hometown’s new restaurant Treylor Park, which started out of good ol’ Savannah, GA. And so, we wanted to try Hitch, a third location of these unique and eclectic restaurants.
Just like back in Nocatee, the restaurant’s funky and fun decor and fun cocktails were made to impress. We even indulged in their signature Nachos Grande and our bellies were content without a doubt! If you’re looking for a memorable and unique experience, Treylor Park or Hitch are your place!

Best Breakfast:
We were blown away by the deliciousness that Pacci Italian Kitchen + Bar offered for Thanksgiving morning breakfast. This adorable farmhouse-style restaurant would be a great choice for any meal or a cocktail. Their breakfast potatoes were the best I have ever had and their fresh-squeezed juice options were one-of-a-kind.

Most Memorable:
For Thanksgiving dinner, we selected Olde Pink House which is located just a stones throw away from Planter’s Inn. This iconic Savannah experience is truly a once-in-a-lifetime choice. We chose the Thanksgiving prix fixe menu which was a bit pricier than a normal meal out.

However, I highly recommend this well-run establishment for a meal when in Savannah. We created memories there this Thanksgiving that will last a lifetime longer than the price we paid to dine there.

After the Eating

Walking around the beautiful city of Savannah, GA is the best way to truly experience all that this city has to offer. Some of our favorite memories of taking a mini-trek to Savannah will forever be pointing out beautiful and unique old and restored homes and buildings.

We have so much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, even though our holiday didn’t look like it typically does with family up north. Instead, we filled our bellies to the brim with good friends and conversation.
We were reminded though that while each and every single one of these meals provided us a huge sense of satisfaction, it was always temporary. We were hungry two hours later again. Only Jesus can truly satisfy us and fill us to overflowing constantly.

Trip Tips:

1: Just walk: don’t overthink it! There are delicious restaurants around every corner. Our above choices are based on lots of research in the area and we believe they are some of the very best in Savannah, GA although you can’t truly go wrong!

2: If going during fall, find a restaurant that offers the Fall Shrub cocktail: bubbles with fall spices. Yum, yum!

3: If you visit on a Thursday – Saturday, check out Coastal Heritage Society’s Pinpoint Museum, a unique way to learn more about specialty crabs found only in marshes.
