hosted by Señorio de Nevada; opinions are my own
It had been close to a year since my last writing gig for a hotel. If you’ve been following along since my hotel writing days, that used to be my main focus when it came to family travel. However, since our move to Madrid, Spain and less hotels in Europe working with travel writers, I’ve switched my niche to share more about life as Americans in Spain.
This weekend, though, was a real treat for our family. Señorio de Nevada is located in an enclave on vineyards, overlooking the gorgeous Sierra Nevada mountains. This hotel bodega offers guests an escape from the busyness of big cities in Spain like Granada or Madrid and instead offers a paradise filled with good wine, awesome food and great company. This was our first stop in Andalusia, so it was great to experience southern Spain for the very first time.
The Wines/ Vineyard Tour
This was our family’s first vineyard tour and Señorio de Nevada made it great fun, even for kids. We got to learn the behind-the-scenes steps of making the wine, bottling the bottles and even distributing the product. During the Wine Tasting tour, we were able to sample the six Señorio de Nevada‘s wines, having Logan and I narrow down our favorites. It was a beautiful December day with the mountains in the background and the kids running around chasing local cats: it was the perfect escape from the city.
My favorite wine without doubt is the Oro (red) wine. Of course, I teased, because it’s also the most expensive made at Señorio de Nevada. Logan pressed the Plata (red) wine, with a more gentle taste and less intense notes. We both enjoyed the Rosada (rosé) wine, which is interesting because normally we both are not huge fans of this type of wine. We loved that the manufacturing of their wines was a small team, made up of only six people, and you can feel the passion for the project at their vineyard.
We loved the wines so much that we chose to bring home two boxes full of our favorites to enjoy back in Madrid. These wines are available for shipment to many other countries around the world, including the U.S., so check out how to try some yourself here: Señorio de Nevada.
The Hotel/Location
The hotel offered the biggest bedroom we’ve experienced in Europe yet. Typically, hotel rooms in Europe for families are tough because they only accommodate two people, requiring us to get two separate rooms (double the price). At Señorio de Nevada, we had the awesome room option of having two cots placed in the main room of our bedroom and then a master bedroom, giving us the space that we needed. The hotel is located about twenty minutes outside of the city for Granada, so it’s close enough to make a day trip into the city but far enough to feel the nature in the mountains.
Food/Hospitality
We were able to enjoy several meals at Señorio de Nevada, with our favorites being breakfast (great scrambled eggs, pan con tomate and a generous assortment of breakfast pastries and coffee). We had two dinners there and some of our favorite meals included the beef tenderloin, the salmon and the croquettes. We all loved the desserts, too, with some incredible chocolate mousse on the menu. Yum!
The City of Granada
We spent a few hours in the city of Granada, and honestly, the bros just wanted to get back to Señorio de Nevada. The streets were packed but beautiful and we did enjoy a meal at irreverent, a restaurant with an eclectic menu of tapa options. We are glad to have experienced Granada, but even more glad to have spent our time at Señorio de Nevada.
L’Alhambra
We also spent time visiting the famous L’Alhambra, located about thirty minutes from Señorio de Nevada. This impressive fortress/castle could take hours to explore, but we took a short morning to soak in some of the sights. Our family was impressed by the architecture and it was definitely very different than anywhere we’ve been. They have restored it so well, and I could see why it is considered to be an eighth wonder of the world. If you are making your way to Granada, a stop to the L’Alhambra is a must. Please note that tickets are required to be purchased months in advance and identification (passports, NIEs) are required for entry.
We had a great weekend in Granada and can’t wait for our next city to explore in Spain this December: Sevilla!
