An Afternoon in Gibraltar

We were perplexed by the advice of so many people on Instagram to avoid visiting Gibraltar. So many people said that it wasn’t worth a visit and that the culture there was too odd. The tensions between Spain and the UK over Gibraltar also make peoples’ opinions negative towards the British territory on occasion, so we didn’t know what to expect.

Now that we have visited, we absolutely think Gibraltar is worth a visit. The walk over border control using just our TIE cards with access from Spain but you can also use your passport) was so cool from La Línea de Concepcíon. And it only cost 5 euros to park there for the day! We sailed right through passport control and immediately found ourselves crossing through Gibraltar’s runway – walking through it to get to the territory. It was so interesting how they close the runway when planes come but otherwise it is used as border control/for walking by!

We immediately saw signs of being in the UK, from old-fashioned red telephone booths to street names like Queen Anne. It was so interesting being in a tropical environment yet seeing so much similar to the UK. From English pubs to fish and chips and old town barber shops, it felt like we were walking through the streets of London.

I loved the UK and Gibraltar flags lining the streets, along with the beautiful calles and views down every view. The most interesting part was the language of Llanito, a mix of Andalusian Spanish and English, sort of like its own version of Spanglish. We found the culture and the mix of two things we love, Engish and Spanish, to be so unique. It was so fun seeing their grocery store selling jamón, too!

Definitely spend a few hours exploring Gibraltar. Besides walking on Main Street, you can also head up the rock to see the wild monkeys, the caves and do other exploring but we personally found these to be overpriced (200 euros for a family of four to take the taxis or cable car).
