Our stay was discounted by Club Cala Azul; all opinions are my own.
Our family was excited to spend one of the last weekends of summer on the island of Ibiza. We really enjoyed our month in Tenerife and visits to Mallorca and Menorca, so Ibiza seemed like a logical next choice. Although we enjoyed our holiday soaking up the sun and enjoying beautiful views of the sea and snorkeling, we did learn some valuable lessons this trip. One: travel to Spain’s islands, specifically Ibiza, should not occur in August (high-season). Two: prices are super high in Ibiza during high-season for things like meals out at restaurants and renting a car. While we did enjoy our time there, Ibiza was our least favorite island of Spain that we’ve visited.
Beaches: The beaches in Ibiza are beautiful! I recommend the north end of the island for accommodations for families but the south end closer to the airport also has beautiful beaches. Some beaches are overcrowded, like Es Canal. We absolutely loved Cala Xarraca (so gooood, turquoise water, snorkeling and a great rocky beach) and the natural beach near Club Cala Azul. In the south, we liked Playa Godola which we named the amazing airport beach. Snorkeling in Ibiza is so great so be sure to pickup snorkeling masks at Decathlon! We even enjoyed a beach Bible study together as a family 🙂
Restaurants: Walking the town of Saint Gertrudis is a fun break from the beach. We really liked the simple menu at La Chickeria there. Our favorite food was a brunch at an Old Town cafe, with all natural food and great smoothies. We also had a great seafood paella (for almuerzo ;)) at Los Parasoles.
Costs: We found Ibiza to be even more expensive than Menorca, Mallorca and Tenerife when it came to food especially. I highly recommend finding your local supermarket and staying somewhere like Club Cala Azul with a refrigerator. This helped us cut back costs of two of our three meals per day! Also, be sure to check the return time of your rental car. Many rental car companies in Ibiza charge a premium for returning a car before-hours (we had a very early morning flight) and our car ended up being pretty expensive. Be aware that flight prices are very affordable to get to Ibiza, but it was one of the most expensive destinations I’ve personally visited.
A Missed Opportunity: We would have loved to visit Formentera, the nearby island to Ibiza. During high-season, the ferries and prices on the island to rent a car (which is required) are extra expensive. We’d love to visit Formentera in the future and focus our time more on Formentera.
